Vande Velde Wins Tour of Missouri!
Sept. 14, 2008, St. Louis, MO—With the remnants of Hurricane Ike dumping on St. Louis the evening prior and forcing organizers to detour and shorten the course around deluged areas, the peloton’s major players seemed content that the race was won by Team Garmin/Chipotle-H3O's Christian Vande Velde. Vande Velde crossed the finish safely in the lead group in 16th position, earning the overall race win.
So while most teams simply wanted to battle for the stage in the end, some smaller teams weren’t so eager to give in, and launched efforts through what would become a 53-mile criterium, down from the planned 79 miler.
Ultimately, the stage was taken by Italian Francesco Chicci, with Tyler Farrar taking third.
The team kept VDV out of harm’s way, delivering him to a fine gem in his career crown, which goes nicely with his fifth-place finish at the Tour de France this year.
Tom Danielson finished fifth in general classification, at 1:32 back.
