Garmin/Slipstream wins TTT in Qatar!
Wiggins leads overall
Qatar (Feb 1, 2009) - Putting their team time trial training to the test, Garmin-Slipstream won the opening event at the 2009 Tour of Qatar, a 6K team time trial. Bradley Wiggins crossed the finish first and will wear the gold leader’s jersey while Huub Duyn will wear the best young rider jersey.
Garmin finished the 6 km course in 6′34″, one second faster than Quick Step and two seconds better than the Russian squad, Katusha.
“I am very satisfied with this result because this first stage was our main objective, something we trained for during the Girona camp,” Bradley told L’Equipe. “Now that we’ve succeeded, we can let the sprinters amuse themselves.”
The youngest member of Garmin-Slipstream was very excited to win his first race as a professional. “We put a lot of work in to making sure we rode the team time trial correctly…and it all worked out,” said Ricardo van der Velde. “The coolest thing was the excitement when we found out we won!”
