Paul van der Ploeg wins Oceania Continental Championship
On the demanding track with 280 meters per lap van der Ploeg dominated the U23 competition and won clearly before the two New Zealanders, Jones and Peters. The 20-year-old just barely missed the podium in the elite riders. Gold went to the Australian Olympic athlete Daniel McConnell, who defeated his countryman Lachlan Norris and the New Zealander Mike Northcott. Four laps van der Ploeg could keep up with McConnell and Norris, before his strength slowly ebbed away and he was overtaken by the New Zealander Mike Northcott.
Van der Ploeg was satisfied with his performance: "It was a great weekend to test my climbing skills, and my current form. I feel optimally prepared for the World Cup season 2010."
