Millar moves up to third in epic Giro stage
Italy – Saturday’s epic Stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia, which subjected riders to rain and muddy roads in the Tuscany region of Italy, caused much damage to some of the race’s GC hopefuls, but Garmin-Transitions rider David Millar rode brilliantly, moving up to third place overall.
Crashes and struggles among some riders on the Strade bianche roads made it a manic stage. Rain caused the last 45 kilometers of the 222km race to resemble a spring classic.
Australian Cadel Evans won the stage, but Millar put in a strong performance on his Felt F1 team bike to finish near the front and move into third place overall, behind new race leader Alexandre Vinokourov and second-place Evans. Millar is 1:29 behind Vinokourov heading into Stage 8, another tough day in which riders will face the first summit finish of the three-week race.
